Visakha Eye Hospital Trust actively engages in community outreach through its charity wing launched in 2001.
Inspired by the Aravind Eye Hospital’s founder Dr. Venkataswamy, the trust provides outpatient services free for below-poverty-line patients every morning. A key feature is the School Children’s Eye Screening Program, screening approximately 10,000 children annually and providing free spectacles as needed.
Children requiring further treatment are referred for free care at the base hospital. The trust also runs outreach cataract screening programs in rural and tribal areas, often supported by corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives such as the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Additionally, diabetic retinopathy and retinal disease screening programs target slum and rural populations to prevent vision loss caused by diabetes.
Vocational training programs for paramedical staff further extend the hospital’s impact by building skilled ophthalmic professionals dedicated to eye health services. This multi-faceted approach demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to community health and preventive care.
